The FIE's age rules
The minimum age: 13
No fencer may hold an FIE licence, and so enter an official FIE competition, before their 13th birthday (Organisation Rules, August 2026, o.29.1). FIE Medical Commission minutes of 30 June 2017 record a majority vote to make the 13th birthday the threshold, after discussing whether more medical research on the minimum age was needed. The FIE's LA28 Olympic qualification system refers to the same o.29.1 minimum age.
Participants who are under the age of majority in the host country must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or validly delegated adult who can act on health and doping-control matters (o.29.4).
Cadet, junior, senior and veteran
| FIE category | Who | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Cadet | Under 17 at midnight on 31 December of the current season | o.29.2 (August 2026) |
| Junior | Under 20 at midnight on 31 December of the current season | o.29.2 (August 2026) |
| Senior | No maximum age outside the veteran categories | o.29.3 (August 2026) |
| Veteran | Age groups 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over, by age in the year of competition | o.114 (August 2026); the same groups appear in the December 2025 edition |
The junior wording changed recently. The FIE Congress of 22 November 2025 rewrote it from "under 20 at midnight on 31 December of the year preceding the year in which the competition takes place" to the current-season wording, matching the cadet rule; the August 2026 Organisation Rules carry the new text.
How the categories show up in competition
- The Junior and Cadet World Championships have twelve individual events, six junior and six cadet, and six junior team events (o.37). The FIE's historical note traces the World Junior Championships to Congress decisions from Paris in 1949 onward, and the World Cadet Championships, individual only, to the Neuchatel Congress of 1998 (i.5).
- Junior and cadet rankings each count a fencer's best six World Cup results plus the World Championships, and juniors add the Zonal Championships (o.108.1).
- Veterans' direct elimination bouts are to 10 hits, or two periods of 3 minutes (Technical Rules, December 2024, t.42). At the Veteran World Championships video refereeing is optional (o.105).
- For black-card suspensions, the 2025 Congress amendments (read from the decisions document; a clean 2026 edition of the Technical Rules could not be opened) define the active season for cadets and juniors, as for seniors, as 1 September to the World Championships.
United States: USA Fencing
- USA Fencing runs youth categories Y8 (8 and under), Y10, Y12 and Y14, with eligibility by birth year set in its age classification table (Athlete Handbook 2023-2024, section 2.8). The 2025-26 and 2026-27 editions of that section were not read for this page.
- Division I North American Cups are for fencers 13 or older (Athlete Handbook 2023-2024, section 2.12.5).
- The 2026-2027 Athlete Handbook, first published 11 September 2026, logs a change on 27 September 2026 clarifying age-category eligibility exceptions for Senior, Junior, Cadet, Y12 and Y14.
- For Y8 and Y10 competitions the maximum blade length is 32.5 inches; other competitions use standard blade lengths (Athlete Handbook 2026-2027, 2.17.1).
- Para fencers must be at least 13 on 1 January of the competition year (USA Fencing, Parafencing Classification page).
United Kingdom: British Fencing
British Fencing ties its youth rules to blade size, and its kit requirements to the activity (Safety Guidelines, 23rd edition, approved 25 June 2026). British Fencing lists a 24th edition, Board approved in September 2026, which could not be read, so the section numbers here are from the 23rd:
| Group | Blade size | Kit (both fencers) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 | Size 0 (section 2.3) | CEN 1 (350 N) jacket and plastron; full-length trousers with openings closed, or breeches; CEN 1 mask (350 N bib) with back safety strap; any fencing glove. CEN 1 breeches in BF-licensed competitions or wherever the leg is target (6.6) |
| Under 14 | Normally size 3 at foil, size 2 at epee and sabre, or smaller (section 2.3) | CEN 1 (350 N) jacket, plastron and breeches; CEN 1 mask (350 N bib) with back safety strap; any fencing glove (6.7) |
| All ages at FIE competitions | Maraging blades | CEN 2 800 N FIE-marked jacket, plastron and breeches; CEN 2 mask with 1,600 N bib, FIE mark and two rear safety systems; FIE 800 N sabre glove (6.12) |
The guidelines also make rigid chest protection compulsory for anyone with female breasts and recommend it for girls from age 10, or from the onset of puberty if earlier (1.5). They advise that generally no more than twelve children per coach fence at once in children's classes, with fewer for young children, and require consent from a parent or person in loco parentis for fencers under 18 entering a competition (Appendices 2 and 3). The main 2026 change, announced on 1 July 2026, requires breeches for under-14s using size 2 or 3 electric blades in traditional club sparring.
The same child, different rules
These are separate rule books for separate events. A 12-year-old cannot enter an FIE competition at all under o.29.1, but can compete in national youth events under USA Fencing's or British Fencing's own rules, with the blade sizes and kit those bodies set. At FIE events, British Fencing's chart notes, the FIE's full equipment rules apply to every age group. What a club requires day to day is the club's and the national body's decision. More detail on kit by age is on the youth rules and youth equipment levels pages.
